Curly hair is gorgeous, bounces and so much fun especially during the summer time! Knowing how to get frizz-free curls is important to tame your mane. We tend to overlook the fact that our hair can’t keep up with too much styling and stress. In this blog post, I’ll talk about taking care of your curly hair and learning the art of frizz control!
Before I proceed with the tips on how to get frizz-free curls, first, let us identify the cause of the problem. The hair is known as our crowning glory and it is the first thing everybody notices at first glance. Most of the time, our hair goes through a lot of stress that leads to a lack of hydration. The hair undergoes too much styling that it ends up in a dry and brittle state. Humidity also contributes to lack of hydration. Women with curly hair tend to suffer more under humid conditions since natural oils distribute easily in straighter hair.
Here are some tips for styling frizz-free curls:
1. Moisturize and Hydrate Your Curls
You heard me, the goal is to put back all the water that was lost and make sure the hair ends up hydrated as much as possible. Do this by using a curl-enhancing shampoo and a moisturizing conditioner.
Since hydration is a big factor, moisturizing is always the best option. You tend to apply a lot of products in your hair and forget about moisturizing it quite often and make sure to deep condition once a month. Curl creams are best applied when the hair is still wet.
Lock in moisture regularly. After cleansing your hair, use oils that are medium-bodied or butter that melt to creamy oils for better conditioning and moisture.
2. Drying Process
Traditional towel drying tends to cause friction that takes a lot of moisture that your hair needs to withstand humidity and stress. It also causes further breakage and has loops that tug your hair while you dry it. The best way to dry your curly hair is by using a microfiber hair towel. Another great way to get frizz-free curls is by using an old soft shirt to dry your hair.
3. DO NOT touch while wet
Resist the temptation and avoid touching your hair while it is drying. Although tempting, touching your hair does nothing but cause more frizz to your hair. Make sure that your hair is completely dry before you touch it.
4. Taming Kinky Hair:
It is hard to totally eliminate frizz in Kinky curly hair but one way to tame this type of curl is by minimizing split ends. To ensure this, consult your stylist frequently to get a trim every six months. Make sure that your hairstylist knows how to take care of your textured hair. Sparse hair and split ends are what makes your hair look more frizzy and unattractive. One way to minimize frizz to your kinky hair is by keeping your hair in a stretched state before styling to allow a proper distribution for natural oils and moisture from root to tips.
5. Gels are not your enemy
Yes, it is true that gel does leave a crispy texture to your hair but a tiny bit amount of gels mixed with your leave in conditioner are necessary to prevent frizz. To achieve a soft, gleaming and sharper look, scrunch at interval while air drying 70% and then use a hairdryer to set the gel and then finish by scrunching your curls.
6. Wait It Out
Just like old jeans, curls from yesterday are better. Sleep with your hair clipped up and don’t forget to change your sheets from cotton to silk. Satin or silk causes less friction and frizzy hair when you wake up in the morning.
7. Say No To Harsh Products
Make sure that the product you are using does not contain alcohol since it also leads to dry hair. Other chemicals to avoid include sulfates, silicon and other unnecessary fillers that only cause frizzy and dry hair. One natural substitute is Aloe Vera which is great for holding and defining your curls.
8. Great Detangling Brush, your BEST Friend
Invest in detangling combs and smoothing brushes. These tools give your hair freedom from stressful tugging and spontaneous breakage as cheap bristles leave your hair damaged
The key to master these tips is to maintain a hair regime. To give you an example, start with cleansing, conditioning, moisturizing and finally, styling. Love your hair and your hair will do the rest.
